MIA DEARDEN: WHAT ABOUT HER?

I’ve been asking myself a question. Why isn’t Mia more popular? She’s been around for almost ten years now, and she’s only been in 68 books, why is that? Is it because she’s difficult to write? Because with such a distinctive voice that I believe she has I honestly don’t think it would be. If you didn’t want to touch on the emotional stuff I don’t think it would be that difficult to avoid. Is it just because she’s difficult to get at all, first she was in Green Arrow, then she was with the Titans for a short time but quit but stayed with Green Arrow, then she left to London. I guess I can understand her being busy, but there is crossover all the time with other books. Why is that so difficult for Mia?

And she seems to be popular with the fans, at least people seem to say they like her a lot. But why is it so rare to see any fan works of her? Search for fanart of her, there isn’t much compared to other characters out there. And do I really need to get started on fanfics out there? The ones she is in she’s usually just a back up character. I can’t imagine that it’d be difficult to get an Archer somewhere else, look at all the things with Roy in them, I get he’s been around for longer ok, I get that. But still.

And why does everyone seem to be so hesitant to write Mia in any sort of relationship. And I’m not even talking about them having sex. Like I said usually she’s just a supporting character in fans stories and I think it’s sad. Is it the stigma attatched to her being HIV positve? I really don’t want to say that is why there is such a lack of her in any fan works because one that’s a huge assumption, and two it’s a blanket accusation that I don’t think is true, but is that why there aren’t any real fanon ships for Mia besides Mia/Jason (And I’m not counting mine because I write Mia a lot and I ship her with at least a few people).

Maybe it’s just the baggage that she has that makes it hard to put her in a relationship with someone else. I could see that. But isn’t that the fun of writing stuff? The drama, and working through issues and all of that? It is for me at least. Though I do sometimes wonder if she’s often left out because she is HIV positive, but I hope that isn’t the case. I guess I could see the same problem with the finding her voice thing, I give fan writers more leeway with that because they aren’t the paid writers who I believe should be able to write at least the characters they should be writing (I swear to god Krul if you don’t put her in GA I’m forever not ever standing up for you again).

I don’t know. I guess this is my resentment at there being so little of anything Mia anywhere, and I hope my resentment is delicious. But really guys, you should think about this, and why this is. It’s something I’ve thought about.
